PROPHECIES CONCERNING THE MESSIAH

(from Moody Press, 1976, Share the New Life with a Jew@)

2 Peter 1:20‑21, Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. [21] For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Fulfillment of Types

A type is a literary symbol of something, usually something in the future.  The Bible is loaded with types of Christ, and Jesus fulfilled them all.  They are not exactly prophecies, or predictions, because they don't specifically say this or that will happen to so and so.  They are usually people or objects which find their fuller meaning in the life and work of Jesus Christ.   For example:

bullet

He was a prophet like Moses, who led the people of God out of their slavery to sin, symbolized by the exodus out of Egypt.  Deuteronomy 18:15/Matthew 21:11; Luke 2:25‑34; Luke 7:16; Luke 24:19; John 1:21; John 1:25; John 4:19; Acts 3:22; Acts 7:37.

bullet

He was the leader like Joshua who led the people of God into the promised land of a relationship with God.

bullet

He was a High Priest like Aaron, who represents the people before God, pleading for their forgiveness on the basis of the sacrifice He brings.

bullet

He was a priest in the order of Melchizedek, whose name means A king of righteousness

bullet

He was also the Son of David, who will sit on David's throne

bullet

He was the Noah who saves His people from the wrath of God=s judgment

bullet

He was the Jonah who spent three days in the belly of the grave, instead of the fish, and then was raised again to new life and service for God.

bullet

covering from sin and shame typified by the garments of skin that God made for Adam and Eve

bullet

the only begotten and well beloved Son miraculously born pictured by Isaac, whom God commanded Abraham to sacrifice

bullet

protection from the Angel of death prefigured by the shed blood of the Passover Lamb.

bullet

cure from the Serpent's bite typified by the brass serpent that Moses lifted up on a pole in the wilderness; Jesus said if He was lifted up, He would draw all men to Himself.

bullet

life-giving fountain, the water of life symbolized by the rock that gushed water in the desert when Moses struck it.

bullet

the bread of life foreshadowed by the Manna which God supplied the Israelites in the wilderness

bullet

And He was the Scapegoat, on whom the sins of the people were laid, and then it was driven outside the camp, as symbolized by the fact that Jesus died outside the city.
