Mexico Medical Missions - Rivera Ministries

Our mission

To show/share the love of Christ to the Tarahumara Indians here in the mountains of Mexico, by Mercy and Evangelism through our work with Mexico Medical Missions, at Hospital Misión Tarahumara (Edwin's work with hospital administration and staff, and Shelley’s work as a midwife).  It is our goal (in the midwifery aspect) to train local women in midwifery while trying to reduce the maternal & infant mortality rates, which are the highest in ALL of Mexico & 5th highest in all the world, so people can hear about our Lord's saving grace. Edwin continues his fulltime work even though we are currently out of Mexico and living in Corpus Christi, TX. Shelley keeps up her midwifery credentials and communication with another nurse and midwife there.

Please pray for us

Because of all the violence and drug war in Mexico, we are out of the country, for safety and to deal with some family issues. We arrived in Samachique August 2006 and are still very much involved (especially Edwin) in many aspects of the ministry. At this time, we are looking to God for His wisdom and direction as to what is next for us as a family and as a ministry, as we want to be effective as we are away from Mexico, and as we seek the best timing for our return.

We cannot thank you enough for your continued emotional, financial and spiritual support during all this time; if there has ever been a time where we've needed that, it is now, as we're living and doing life and ministry in the US and in Mexico (long distance). Edwin has hosted some mission and church teams here, and will be making more trips to Mexico to keep his relationship with the mission staff & missionaries in good-standing! As soon as we have some sort of direction or idea of what is next for us, we will let you know, but in the meantime, we would continue to ask you for your support and prayers as we go through this process.  So far it has been a very difficult adjustment process for all of us and especially the girls. We are looking forward to meet with a counselor to help us adapt to being in the US again, and deal with to this culture and difficult challenges we're facing.

Praises:

  • Praises for the prayer support.  Edwin is home safe and sound after a productive busy trip.
  • for the opportunity to share at a Hispanic church.

Requests:

  • Pray for the Mexico Medical Mission, that the team at the hospital find peace even in an overworked environment.
  • Pray for Edwin as he assumes more remote responsibilities at MMM.  He will travel to MMM about every 6-8 weeks.
  • We, at the hospital, are a bit shorthanded when it comes to medical personnel.  We are in critical need of additional staff such as: a pediatrician (who could either come here on full or part time basis, or occasionally, to provide more training for our 4 General Practitioners), an OB/GYN (same as for pediatrician needs) and an anesthesiologist (same as above and maybe even sporadically -a couple of times a year- as we host "surgery weekend outreaches" on a monthly basis).
