Faith in Action Project with Habitat for Humanity

October 1, 2011

On October 1 a small group of volunteers from Faith Church participated in a local Habitat build. I was a part of that group, and I want to tell you that if you‘ve never done one before, than you should look into it. Habitat makes serving the Lord and serving our community so simple and inviting that really anyone with any level of construction experience, and a willingness to help can participate. Our team consisted of ten people who ranged in age from teens to sixties and we had six men and four women. We worked on a house that was at the stage where we needed to hang windows and siding. I can assure you that I had never done either of those things before, and after six hours of work I was proficient at both. But aside from learning a useful skill, and knowing that you are helping to build a home for a needy family, another great reward was the tighter friendship that we developed with our workmates.
I had the privilege of working with a young college student from Faith, and after struggling to develop a system for both the windows and the siding we formed a tight bond, and I saw the same thing happening all around us. In the end I was reminded that in God‘s economy a sacrifice is usually met with a reward. My rewards were much greater than the simple Saturday morning of watching college football that I gave up. Next time you see a chance to hop into a Habitat build… do it, and come and find me afterward and share your story!
